East Dart Waterfall

The East Dart waterfall is worth walking to. It is one of the most striking of Dartmoor waterfalls. This walk takes you there but via a slightly roundabout way.
Start at the Postbridge car park SX 646788, but walk up the B3212, cross over the bridge (the new one!) and take the first left. This takes you into a muddy field from where you can head on up the East Dart valley by skirting around Hartyland. You can either walk up to Hartland Tor or follow the track that stays near to the river. Either way, gorse bushes and clitter don't offer the easiest of walks. When the river loops around near Lade Hill then visit the beehive hut, cross the Lade Hill and take the track that leads to Sittaford. Climb up the slopes of Winney's down and follow the leat track which will take you to the waterfall. Cross the river and then head back to Postbridge via Broadun and Drift Lane.
A 5 mile walk that poses few problems. The worst walking is through the gorse and over the clitter. If the East Dart is running high then you may find it tricky to cross. No military areas.

The start of the walk looking northwards from SX 647792. The big house in the middle distance is Hartyland.
Ploughing our way through the gorse bushes. The East Dart is just on the left.
Looking west over towards Braddon Lake and Broadun on the horizon.
The East Dart just as it curves around to pick up the Braddon Lake stream.
Looking back down the East Dart valley from SX 640804. You can see the round shape of Roundy Park over the way. The thick gorse ends here.
Looking north up the East Dart valley.
Looking north from (SX 640810) towards Sittaford Tor on the right and Winney's Down on the left.
The East Dart valley from SX 640813. You can see the line of the Powder Mill leat on the other side of the river.
The Lade Hill beehive hut - SX 639814. Probably used as a store.
Another view of the beehive hut with Sittaford on the right horizon and Winney's Down on the left.
The path that joins Lade Hill brook and Sittaford Tor. This is a pretty secluded place.
The view over the upper Lade Hill valley from the east slopes of Winney's Down beside the Vitifer leat. You can see the newtake wall that snakes over to Sittaford Tor. Less obviously there is the faint horizontal track of the leat that carries on towards Fernworthy.
An unexpectedly odd rock found on Winney's Down at SX 632819
Winney's Down brook. Spot the leat track on the hill slope.
Ruins of a small bridge over the Vitifer leat at SX 631812. There's a few of these bridges around here and the leat ruins are more obvious than is often the case on Dartmoor.
The East Dart waterfall - SX 628811.
Another view of the waterfall.
Looking down the steep sided East Dart valley.
There's mist gathering over at Cut Hill.
The view from the Broadun newtake wall. Higher White Tor is on the horizon.
