Ryder's Hill

Ryder's Hill is the highest point of southern Dartmoor. It is a bleak and featureless place but has excellent views over the moor and part of South Devon. There are some rather nondescript pillars plus a triangulation point placed on top of an overgrown low cairn. Many years ago this cairn was known as Knattleborough and it was a named point in the 1240 Dartmoor perambulation.
Park at Combestone Tor (SX 670718). Head southwards up the hill. There are some fairly distinct tracks and despite the smooth grassy terrain the summit of Ryders is quite obvious. From Ryders you can head along the SE ridge to Snowdon and Puper's Hill. Or you can head off westwards to admire the bleak wilderness of Aune Head mire. Or you can venture south to Huntingdon Warren. Or you can go straight back to the car park.
This is a fairly easy walk although there is a bit of a climb and the ground can be quite wet. Be careful of mist. The weather can change quickly up here.
