Rival Tor

This is a quick and easy walk - especially on a calm summer's evening! Rival Tor is part of the extensive bowl of Gidleigh Common and is easy to get to. There are excellent views from Rival Tor over Gidleigh Common and the North Teign plain.
Park off the road by Great Ensworthy (SX 659895). Take the track that leads up to Buttern Hill and head SW between Buttern and Kennon hills. Cross the small ford at SX 649885, and take the west track that goes to Garteven. After a short while turn south to Rival Tor.
This is a short and easy walk with only a modest climb up Buttern Hill. However, mist could easily make this walk a challenge. Allow 1.5 hours. You could easily extend this walk by heading up towards Wild Tor.

The start of the walk near Great Ensworthy. Buttern Hill is on the horizon and one of the tracks up the hill is clearly visible.
The easterly view from Buttern Hill. In the middle distance you can see Teign Valley with Castle Drogo. On the right are some Chagford houses.

The south view from Rival Tor. On the right horizon lies Watern Tor while to its left is the steep valley of the Teign and it goes past Manga Hill.
