Lynch TorLynch Tor is a commanding tor on the western face of Dartmoor. Next to it is the Limsboro Cairn (SX 565805) which is a Bronze Age landmark that was included when the position of Dartmoor was defined in the perambulation of 1240. Lynch Tor is easy to get to but it decisively marks the division between the lower Dartmoor farmlands and the wastes of the upper fen. From Lynch Tor you can see both. It is a good place to start more adventurous exploring. Lynch tor derives its name from the nearby sunken track (or lynch) that was used to cart peat away from the upper Walkham.Park at the Baggator car park (SX 546805) and take the track up onto the moor. To start with this follows the ancient path of the old Lych Way. Once you're past the newtake walls take the obvious track of the Black Lane which is an old peat path that leads up to the peat workings of Walkham Head. It skirts below Lych Tor. Once you're on the wet plateau you have many damp possibilities underfoot. We headed back down the Walkham valley and then crossed to Lych Tor from where we walked south toward White Barrow to join the Lych Way. You can then go back down to the car park. This is a short walk with easy climbs. It is wet though, and once you're on the plateau above the Walkham valley be careful of mist. Takes about 2.5 hours. The area is within the military range.
