Legis TorLegis Tor (SX 571655) was the centre of one of Dartmoor's rabbit warrening businesses. It is on the side of the Plym river and there are four other warrens in the area. The warren was probably originally set up in the 14th century shortly after rabbits were introduced to Britain. Burrowing is not easy on granite so pillow mounds were made to house the rabbits. These were long banks of stone covered with soil and turf. There are many of these mounds around Legis Tor. Vermin traps are another feature of the warrens. Weasels or stoats would spring a slate within the trap and thereby become imprisoned to await the warrener's terriers. Legis Tor is an unremarkable tor but it provides a good way to explore the fascinating Plym river area.Park at Cadover Bridge (SX 555646). Owing to weather conditions we headed off up the roaf to the Brisworthy Plantation and then headed east over Ringmoor. It is an easy walk to Legis Tor past a stone circle and row. Admire the view from Legis Tor and then head for the Plym river. Follow the river down and head off along the leat that takes you to Legis Lake. Then back to Brisworthy. An easy walk with no military activity to worry about. Allow about 2 hours.
