Bowerman's Nose

Bowerman's Nose is a well known Dartmoor landmark. The odd shape of the granite pinnacle features in many books and pamphlets. Bowerman could be a corruption of "bowman", an archer or huntsman. One old story has it that a Bowerman was out hunting one day and his dogs disturbed a groups of witches. They cursed him and turned him and his hounds into petrified stones. Certainly, the rocks around here take a variety of different shapes and it is easy to see why such a legend arose.
Park off the road (limited parking) at SX 739806 and walk up the gentle SE slope to the pinnacle. Admire the stone and then walk over the flat top of Hayne Down. You can circumnavigate this in a very short time and return the way you came.
A very easy walk taking little more than an hour to do. An ideal summer evening jaunt. The military areas are nowhere near.

Another view of Bowerman's Nose - this time without the nose!
A northerly view from Hayne Down. The house on the right is Ebworthy, while in the distance lies the town of Moretonhampstead.
Easdon.
A strange shaped rock. Looks like a turtle's head.
Looking SE from Hayne Down towards Haytor rocks withe the Becka valley in between.
Another SE view.
Yet another SE view with a southerly slant. On the right is Hound Tor looking less dominant that it often appears closer by.
The surprisingly impressive front of the rocks of Hayne Down. This is not dissimilar to the granite wall of Great Mistor.
A small wannabe logan stone perched on the rocks at SX 743804 not far from Bowerman's Nose.
The SE view from the rocks on top of Hayne Down. Hound Tor is on the right with Hey Tor on the horizon.
The road that skirts the NW side of Hayne Down. As you can see there is little room here for parking.
