Devon Parish Churches 4


The fashion for displaying the Royal Arms in churches started in Henry VIII's time - a reaction to the negation of Catholicism. The fashion became more established in Elizabeth's reign. After the Reformation of Charles 2nd all English churches had to display the Royal Arms. Over the next 300 years the style and detail of the paintings evolved. They now give us an entry into some of the artistic and political fashions of their times.
